Visiting Costa Rica in the COVID-19 era

What you should know before you visit Costa Rica in 2021...

Following months of travel restrictions, Costa Rica opened its borders in late 2020 with a strategic and thoughtful mindset. To mitigate the spread of COVID-19 within its borders and beyond, and to protect the health of its local communities, ecosystems, and hospitals, as well as tourists and other visitors, the Costa Rican government has established requirements for visitors from abroad to comply with before entering the country. These requirements are:

  1. Fill out the electronic epidemiological health pass form with the Ministry of Health before departure
  2. Not show or experience symptoms associated with COVID-19
  3. Verification of current, valid travel protection and travel medical insurance that meets the following three conditions:
  • Effectiveness of the policy during the visit to Costa Rica
  • Coverage for Medical expenses in the event of becoming ill with the COVID-19 virus while on Your trip in Costa Rica, for at least $50,000
  • Includes minimum coverage of $2,000 for Trip Delay for quarantine accommodations/lodging expenses if you are delayed in returning home on Your Scheduled Return Date.

If you find a way to check these items off your list, you can enter the "pura vida" mindset in anticipation of and throughout your travels to Costa Rica, giving yourself the opportunity to truly enjoy the diverse and rich cultures, landscapes, beaches, marine life, rainforests and cloud forests, volcanoes, rivers, waterfalls, music, food, yoga, relaxation, and adventure activities within reach. And it's all within a country that has taken significant steps to maximize ecological sustainability and regeneration - with an abundance of national parks, wildlife refuges and reserves, and a commitment to clean energy.

We have worked with Trawick International to represent the Safe Travels Voyager travel protection policy, which is underwritten by Nationwide, and has been updated to meet the requirements set by the Costa Rica government.

  • The Safe Travels Voyager plan is in full compliance with the coverages needed to obtain your travel health pass.
  • This travel insurance plan provides up to $100,000 for trip cancellation and includes a $250,000 per person limit for primary medical coverage.
  • To comply with the new regulations, the Safe Travels Voyager plan offers a minimum of $2,000 of Travel Delay coverage for quarantine accommodations/lodging expenses if you are delayed in returning home on Your Scheduled Return Date.

Travel Insurance 101: Why Should I Buy Travel Insurance?
